The LPL Knights Rivals were supposed to confirm the pecking order and they did the opposite. Across the four crossover series between Ascend and Nirvana, the side that should be favourite came within a game of losing the fourth.
The only result to break the trend was Team WE 3-2 LNG. WE finished bottom of Ascend, LNG topped Nirvana, and the form pick was clearly LNG. The series stayed tight from start to finish, but WE's mid-jungle duo carried the BO5 and and .
The biggest name to fall is Weibo Gaming. On paper, LGD never had a chance against a roster built around Xiaohu, Elk and JieJie. WBG's form told a different story all split, and LGD pressed on it. Two games up, then pulled back to 2-2, then a clean Game 5. The result eliminates WBG and ends Elk's three-year run of MSI qualifications.
EDG produced the other major upset. NIP came in as the darkhorse of the group stage, with games taken off BLG and AL and a bot lane that read like one of the early-split storylines. Across five games, EDG dismantled that narrative. Their macro was sharper, their mid-game stronger, and Leave put together a huge BO5, outclassing the NIP duo that had carried the team's hype.
TT 3-0 iG completes the pattern. The Nirvana side never lost control, and the scoreline understates how comfortable it looked. Ascend's bracket position counted for nothing.
The losers are eliminated from any MSI qualifications and drop to Nirvana next split. The winners move to Ascend. Players like Elk, Wei, JieJie, Meiko and others more used to fighting for Worlds and MSI seeding now have to fight for promotion instead.
For LGD, TT, EDG and the smaller orgs joining Ascend, the opportunity is enormous. Younger rosters and less-credentialed players get a regular run at the top of the LPL — and the bracket says they have already cleared that bar once.
The headline question sits with WBG. A roster of this calibre missing playoffs is the kind of result that forces a reassessment, and a large share of the next few weeks of LPL coverage will revolve around what changes inside the org — and whether Elk's streak ending can be the start of a longer downturn.
