The MSI 2026 main event got underway in Daejeon, the bracket down to eight after the Play-Ins thinned the field. Day 1 opened round one of the upper bracket with two best-of-fives: Hanwha Life against Team Secret Whales, then G2 against . Here's you recap of today's series.
HLE got through in the expected fashion, a level above Team Secret Whale from the first game. The vietnamese team had their moment — an early lead in game three — but never enough to shake the outcome. The story was individual class, and the solo lanes above all. Zeka was imperial across the series: 20/2/13, a 63% kill participation, 81.0k total damage and an 89 RFT score over the three games.
Even in the jungle, where the matchup looked like TSW's best hope, HLE held the edge — Hizto went head-to-head with Kanavi, rated one of the best early-game junglers in the world, and came out ahead on the numbers, +285 Gold Diff and +532 XP Diff at 15 across the series.
The clock told the rest. An average game time of 28:14 was another reminder of what HLE are — a team built on speed and snowball, closing games before opponents can find a foothold.
For two games this looked like it might belong to Top Esports, and specifically to their solo laners. Creme took Caps apart in game one — +12 CS, +1014 gold and +876 XP at 15 — and ZUIAN did the same to BrokenBlade, a +22 CS, +1584 gold, +1292 XP gap by the same mark. Game two carried the theme, Creme going 11/0/9 on Aurora. Two-zero down in all but name, G2 needed to find another gear.
They found it, and the man holding the line while they did was Rudy "SkewMond" Semaan. Even through the two-game slump he was the constant — a good Olaf game while his team lost around him — and once G2 turned the series, he set the tempo. A 5/0/18 Skarner in game three, then a game-four Vi that kept finding the engage, locking down Jackeylove and cutting the TES carry out of the fight entirely. Labrov climbed with him from game three onwards, his Rakan a menace down the stretch. And Caps came back to his best, his Syndra good enough to land a pentakill as the series swung G2's way.
Speaking after the win, Labrov put the early deficit on G2 themselves rather than on anything TES did:
It was more about us playing badly or choking. As long as we fix ourselves we could win.
By game five the turnaround was complete, and no one embodied it better than BrokenBlade. Beaten by ZUIAN in game one, he flipped the matchup entirely in the decider — an Anivia that shut ZUIAN's Ornn out of the game and dragged the whole TES side down with it. And a fifth game is where this G2 roster lives — deep best-of-fives, a tense five-game LEC final against KC not long ago — while TES's rookies had never faced it at this level.
The gap showed in the smallest moments: in the game-five draft, TES fumbled a jungle-support champion swap and ended up in exactly the spot they had tried to avoid. Inexperience, hesitation, or both — either way, it was the kind of error that gets you punished at highest level. One team knew the feeling of a decider, the other didn't. Call it a TES choke if you like, or call G2 what they keep proving to be: the masters of game-five.
The two winners meet next: G2 face Hanwha Life in the upper bracket, a first real measure of where this G2 side stands against one of the tournament favourites. Top Esports and Team Secret Whales drop into the lower bracket, where one of them will end their MSI early. Before that, round one wraps up tomorrow with LYON against FURIA, then BLG against T1.
