The ERL Rulebook changelog published on April 15 introduces two additions that formalize role assignments in official matches.
Section 5.3 ("Starting Line-Up Submission") now includes article 5.3.1.4, requiring teams to assign each player on the submitted Starting Line-Up to one of the five in-game roles — Top, Jungle, Mid, Bot, or Support — with only one player permitted per role.
Section 11.3 ("Setup Time") adds article 11.3.8 ("In-Game Role"), which obligates players to actually play the role declared at roster submission, again capping each team at one player per role.
The update has come just days after our report, in which Riot Games confirmed that players are not allowed to switch roles to share the same quest in official pro matches — a policy the publisher said has been in effect globally since the start of the 2026 Season and was communicated to all Tier 1 Leagues and Tournament Organizers ahead of the season. Until now, the rule appeared in no rulebook.
The controversy originated in a Road Of Legends (Benelux League) series between Frites Esports Club and Once Upon A Team, in which three FEC players — the midlaner, ADC, and support — ran the support quest simultaneously across both games of the BO3.
